RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING

I buy the ready-made taco seasoning packets.  They are very inexpensive and a time-saver.  However, I know that there are the kitchen divas out there, the Martha Stewart types, who insist on being able to say that whatever they serve is "Homemade".  Nothing wrong with that.  It's just not my way.

If you prefer to make your own taco seasoning because the store-bought brand contains ingredients you don't like, for whatever reason, here is a basic recipe.

Come to think of it, it would also make a nice gift.  One time I made Christmas cards for my children's teachers with my "perfected" chili recipe printed on them.

Essential Taco Seasoning Ingredients

  • Chili powder — the backbone; provides warmth and color

  • Ground cumin — earthy, savory, classic taco flavor

  • Paprika — adds color and mild sweetness (use smoked paprika for a deeper flavor)

  • Garlic powder — savory base note

  • Onion powder — rounds out the flavor

  • Oregano — herbal brightness

  • Salt — enhances everything

  • Black pepper — adds a little bite

Optional Add-Ins

  • Crushed red pepper — for heat

  • Smoked paprika — for a smoky edge

  • Cayenne — if you want it spicy

  • Brown sugar — a pinch helps balance heat and acidity

  • Cornstarch — helps thicken the sauce when cooking with meat

A Basic Recipe

This makes about the same amount as a store-bought packet:

  • 1 tbsp chili powder

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp oregano

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • Optional: ¼ tsp crushed red pepper or cayenne

Mix and store in an airtight jar. Use 2–3 tablespoons per pound of meat, adjusting to taste.
